Misconstrued to be a racist TT, this is a South African inspired topic expressing language/cultural diversity. While it is not meant to be racist, Americans are taking offense. When in reality, 'darkies' is NOT meant, by SA, to be derogatory.

Yes, darkie was a term used to make the blacks feel inferior. Yes, South Africans do not take lightly to this word. It is highly offensive, especially in South Africa. That is another reason Africans do not understand how African Americans can take the N word lightly. There is something is wrong with you when you use a word w/o knowing the history of oppression.

A topic started in fun by some South African tweeters, this tag is now drawing mixed reactions. Some consider it racist and misguided, others consider it to be OK if the people tweeting it belong to certain racial groups themselves.

This is a racist trend that should be deleted. I know lots of people are tweeting about how bad this topic is but by posting this hashtag in your complaints is also keeping it trending!
